Climate change does not have to be complicated or intimidating. In this presentation you will review the science of climate change, discuss the impacts of climate change, and then explore the practical solutions to climate change that are available right here, right now. Suitable for adults and older teens.

This series is hosted by the Emily Williston Memorial Library, a member of the Pioneer Valley Library Collaborative, in partnership with Voices for Climate. This program is funded in part by Emily’s Friends of the Library.

Teen Advisory Board (“TAB” for short) is a group of teens that meets once a month on ZOOM. The TAB works with library staff to improve events, space, and collection that we offer to teens. Take ownership of these services and help us create the library that you want to see! Presenter: Dr. Gary Yohe, PhD, Huffington Foundation Professor of Economics and Environmental Studies at Wesleyan University, Middletown, CT; Senior member, U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)

This session will open a conversation about the limitations of what we know and don’t know about climate change, and how we can still make proactive decisions to “abate” or “adapt”. We will make it clear, though, that the third option will always be to “suffer” the consequences of inaction. Therefore, the emphasis of the discussion will be on organizing our thoughts about how to respond to the climate system and humanity. Ample time will be available for discussion and Q & A.

Our digital media world can be a scary, dangerous place, especially for children. Digital Literacy educator, advocate, and frequent contributor to Psychology Today Diana Graber will share with us how parents and caregivers can help our kids navigate this environment and build a healthy relationship with technology.

This presentation is addressed to parents of young children and will cover: a developmentally appropriate introduction to tech, social and emotional skill development, screen time, over-sharenting, alternative phones, parental controls, the games young kids love (Roblox & Minecraft) and more.

Presenters: Voices for Climate (V4C)

Join us for this final session of the series to brainstorm actions each of us can take to turn a looming crisis into a triumph of human ‘can do’ spirit. Through short videos and discussion we’ll explore some of the potential pathways that, individually and collectively, we can tackle the climate crisis head on. Attending the prior 2 sessions in this series is not required but definitely useful. This presentation will be addressed to parents of children approximately 12 years of age and up. Topics will include: digital reputation management, screen time and balance, the most popular social media platforms amongst teens (TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat), maintaining online privacy, and much more. It overviews other topics in my book and a discussion guide would be sent to you afterwards so attendees may continue to discuss topics after the presentation.

Alice’s Ordinary People is a documentary film about Alice Tregay – a woman who refused to stand still for injustice. Her remarkable story spans the historic period from the marches of Dr. King to the election of Barack Obama, and her unique contribution in the field of politics is the thread that connects the two.
