In this class, led by artist Lisa Hersey of Antler Editions, we will explore different bookbinding techniques that can be recreated at home. Making a book can be as simple as folding one sheet of paper, or involve 16 pages and sewing! Students will learn how to put content into their books for reproducing editions of their work for themselves or to bring to Press On: Indie Publishing Festival! We will have time to work together and create original books by either decorating the covers, or putting words/drawings onto the pages. Ages 12+, participants must be able to hold and handle a needle. Space is limited, sign up at the library in person or by calling us at 413-527-1031 or emailing us at youthdept@ewmlibrary.org.

Three Saturdays, March 2nd, 9th and 23rd, 8:30am meet outside the library to begin walk, 9:30am reconvene inside the library.

Meet on the steps of the library at 8:30am. A map of the “official route” will be provided that you may follow or adapt to your own needs and interests. Our time of walking and writing is followed by a library meet up with this structure:

9:30-9:45 am: Chat about how the writing and walking went

At 9:45am: Anyone who wants to read from their notebook for up to 3 minutes may

Closing: A go around where people are invited to voice an intention about further developing or sharing their writing from the walk

All of these activities are optional. People who have walked at other points in the week are welcome to join for the sharing.

This event is weather dependent. If it is too wet for our notebooks (i.e. steady rain or snow) we will not go. If it is too icy to walk we will not go.

Are you interested in art, movies, or just want to try something new?  Come to the library to learn all about the art of making storyboards! A storyboard is a series of drawings that visualize what shots will be needed before the crew sets out to film.  Instead of a camera, we use pencils, paper, and our imagination to bring the words to life.  At this program, you’ll get to learn about filmmaking, get a few drawing tips, and make some storyboards of your very own.  No prior experience or skill is required!  Storyboarding is about visualizing ideas, not making brilliant works of art, so there is literally zero pressure.  Ages 10+, Registration is recommended–stop by the library, give us a call at 413-527-1031, or send us an email at youthdept@ewmlibrary.org.

Join local author/illustrator Jeff Mack to celebrate his amazing new book, learn about artists from around the world, their art and their ideas. There will be a drawing activity as well as time to ask Jeff questions. This is a special event, not to be missed! Christina Uss, author of A Girl Called Bicycle and many other “odd books with guaranteed happy endings” will be leading a workshop about how to fix a flat tire while talking about her own 4,000-mile bicycle trip across the United States! Come be a part of our teen advisory group! Come and share ideas about what programs the library could have and what we could buy for our collection. And then stay for a workshop making wallets out of duct tape! Ages 12+

Join local artist Dave Wallace (incendavery.com) to learn about his process for creating diary comics, and turn your own life into a work of art! Dave will lead participants through exercises that incorporate free writing, character creation, and scripting, before helping us put it all together into a finished comic.
