An opportunity for New  English Speakers to practice in a comfortable and welcoming environment and to gain confidence in general communication and in the communication skills needed in ordinary every day life situations.  

Students will learn to:

1. Improve their pronunciation  
2. Build their vocabulary, including slang and idioms
3. Improve their comprehension
4. Build cross cultural skills
5. Gain confidence when speaking English
6. Build life skills useful for seeking medical care, opening bank accounts, job searches and interviews

Classes will meet for one hour twice a week, with flexibility for participants to join once or twice a week as suits their schedule. The schedule can be adjusted to suit the participants’ own schedule needs once the group is formed. 

The initial round of sessions will run for five weeks, beginning Feb 17 & 20. Saturdays will be 10AM-11AM and Tuesdays will be 6PM-7PM.

Come join us for books and playtime! We will gather for songs and stories designed for ages 1-3, but babies, preschoolers, and siblings are all welcome as well. At 11am a craft project will be offered.

In this class, led by artist Lisa Hersey of Antler Editions, we will explore different bookbinding techniques that can be recreated at home. Making a book can be as simple as folding one sheet of paper, or involve 16 pages and sewing! Students will learn how to put content into their books for reproducing editions of their work for themselves or to bring to Press On: Indie Publishing Festival! We will have time to work together and create original books by either decorating the covers, or putting words/drawings onto the pages. Come prepare for the eclipse with us! Smith College astronomy professor and science writer for children, Meg Thacher, will be talking with families about the coming eclipse and leading us in an activity to make a pinhole eclipse viewers! Program geared for elementary aged children but siblings and families are welcome. During this new quarterly program, you will have the chance to make something that will then be on display at the library for about three months. Choose either the Wednesday or the Friday session and come ready to create. For this first display the program is recommended for school-aged children and teens, we will be creating with Model Magic; all supplies will be provided. Registration is required, sign up here in person or by calling us at 413-527-1031 or emailing us at youthdept@ewmlibrary.org.
